The Lenovo P71 is a large-format mobile workstation whose specification prioritises professional graphics, expandability and capacity. Its defining combination is an Intel Xeon E3-v6 or seventh-generation Intel Core processor option alongside NVIDIA Quadro P5000M graphics. That pairing gives the machine a clearly workstation-oriented identity on paper, rather than positioning it simply as a general-purpose laptop.
The memory and storage provisions reinforce that role. Up to 64GB of RAM provides substantial headroom for projects that require considerable working memory, while the stated 2TB capacity can be configured as HDD or PCIe SSD storage. Those are useful foundations for users handling sizeable working files, although the storage technology is a meaningful configuration distinction: the specification lists both options rather than assigning one universal arrangement.
A broad working canvas
The 17.3-inch IPS display is available at either 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 resolution. The larger physical format should provide a generous canvas for workstation applications, while the 4K option offers a denser pixel arrangement than the Full HD configuration. Buyers therefore need to select the resolution according to the type of visual workspace they require; the two choices represent materially different display configurations within the same chassis.
Connectivity is one of the P71’s strongest practical features. Four USB 3.0 ports sit alongside two Thunderbolt 3 connections, HDMI 1.4, Mini DisplayPort 1.2, Gigabit Ethernet and a docking connector. A Smart Card Reader, ExpressCard/34mm slot and microphone/headphone combination jack extend that equipment list. This is a specification built for a desk populated by peripherals, wired networks and external displays, with the docking connector offering a dedicated route into a broader workstation setup.
Wireless provision includes Intel 8265 2x2 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1, while the Sierra EM7445 adds 4G LTE-A. The operating-system choices are similarly broad, covering Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Windows 10 Home 64-bit, Ubuntu Linux and RHEL. That range gives the machine a defined fit for buyers whose software environment requires a choice between Windows and selected Linux distributions.
The physical compromise
The major trade-off is the 3.4kg weight. That figure makes the P71 a substantial machine to transport, even before any accessories are added, so its mobile-workstation designation should not be confused with lightweight portability. Its 96Wh battery capacity is considerable as a stated component specification, but capacity alone does not establish runtime.
